Snow Trails

About

Cooper Landing Trails is a committee of the Cooper Landing Community Club (CLCC), a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization established in May of 1949 to serve, promote, and encourage activities in the interest and welfare of Cooper Landing residents.

The snow grooming program was established in 2009 as the Cooper Landing Nordic Ski Club with an aim to improve winter recreation opportunities around the Upper Kenai.

An AK DNR grant funded equipment and a partnership was developed with the US Forest Service to groom snow trails for all non-motorized, over-snow recreation at the Russian River Campground and Quartz/Crescent Creek areas. The program has since expanded to include snow trails near the Devil’s Creek Trailhead.

Volunteers put in hundreds of hours each year to make that dream into reality.

The Devil’s Creek Trailhead and parking area is on west side of Seward Highway, Mile 39. Snow trails access is at back of parking area beyond gate. See map below for overhead view of the trails. The main (yellow) loop is almost 2.3 miles long.

From the Sterling Highway, follow Quartz Creek Road about two miles back towards the Crescent Creek Trailhead.

Park where the power line crosses the road making sure to leave ample room for plow trucks to turn around.

A trip from the power line to the Crescent Creek trailhead along with the spur loop into the Crescent Creek Campground gives users approximately three miles of easy groomed terrain.

It is a very gradual uphill on the way out making for a mellow return. This area is a great spot for all abilities.

Please note that using the Crescent Creek Trail for winter access to the Crescent Lake Cabin is not advised. Much of the upper trail is subject to significant avalanche hazard. Carter Lake Trail is the recommended access.

Access to the Russian River Campground is Open.

Construction on the entry road of the RRCG has wrapped up for the winter opening the campground and access to the Russian Lakes Trailhead and Russian River as of today.

Users should be mindful of the areas along the road without guardrail and other construction hazards. Snow trail grooming will not be allowed for the 2024/25 winter season.

Construction will resume this spring so stay tuned for updates from the US Forest Service regarding future closures.

Including each loop on an out and back tour of the Russian River Campground will log a user approximately six miles of groomed terrain.

The wide road beds of the campground loops allow double and triple wide passes with the 84” Ginzugroomer making skate skiing at this location a joy.

Classic tracks are typically set along the two mile length of the main road from the entrance to the Grayling parking lot (the western most loop).
